How to Drive Your Semi Truck Through the Mountains
As a semi truck driver in America, you have to be prepared to drive in all types of weather and over many different types of terrain. While our state is known for being pretty flat and temperate, this is not the case when you drive pretty much anywhere north of us. Winter weather becomes a problem, as do mountain ranges. The steep inclines of mountain roads present a unique challenge to semi truck drivers, so here are some tips on how to keep yourself safe in this environment.
Mind the Grade
It’s never wise to assume the percentage of a grade when scaling or descending any type of incline. Typically, in a very hilly or mountainous region, the grade percentage will be posted to help you determine a safe speed to maintain. Do not try to rush this; take your time to climb or descend the hill and do not let your guard down as you approach the bottom, where your truck can suddenly pick up speed or skid through an icy patch.
Maintain Traction
If you know the area you’ll be driving through has the propensity for snow and ice, carry tire chains that you can attach when you hit snowy roads. Pay close attention to weather reports along your route, since the weather can be unpredictable. When driving through snow, don’t follow the tracks of cars ahead of you; create your own tracks so that you get better traction. Also, keep you wheels spinning near the top of their RPM range so they don’t spin too much before hitting the limiter.
