A short wheelbase with a solidly mounted rear axle and fifth-wheel coupling keeps the truck fairly small, since most of the traveling length will be taken up by the semi-trailers it hauls. Yard dog trucks typically have automatic transmissions and diesel or alterative fuel engines with low power. 

How Are They Used?

Similar to the switcher locomotives used at a railyard to transfer railcars to different engines or depots, a yard dog truck is designed to haul unhitched semi-trailers around a yard or warehouse facility to get them where they’re needed for their next task. With a top speed of no more than 25 miles per hour, most yard dog trucks are not really designed for highway or road driving and typically stay in their warehouse realms.
