A Primer on Reefer Trucks

 

The refrigerated truck, also known as a “reefer” truck or trailer, has only been around for barely a century, but in that timeframe, they’ve changed the landscape of fragile cargo transportation forever. Reefer trucks made it possible to ship perishable goods including food, electronics, and medical supplies, over long distances without spoiling, helping people get the products they need. History 

The first reefer trucks were developed for shipping small-scale cold goods over short distances, like ice cream. In the 1950s, though, the Federal Highway Act made roads easier to travel by creating a system of smooth highways with good signage. This meant that reefer trucks could be used on a national scale to transport frozen foods, fresh produce, meat, plasma and blood, heat-sensitive electronics, wine, and many other products. The versatility of reefer trucks is practically unlimited, and new uses are found all the time.

How Does a Reefer Truck Work?

There is a large refrigeration unit installed in every reefer truck, which is cooled using a combination of liquid carbon dioxide and diesel generators. The system has three parts: 

 

  • Compressor: pulls in and compresses gaseous refrigerants so the system can then liquefy them to draw out heat.

  • Condenser: cools down liquid with a heat exchange that uses tubes connected to the truck’s exterior.

  • Evaporator: releases cooled liquid with a metering valve to keep the interior of the truck at the correct temperature.
