History 

The first reefer trucks were developed for shipping small-scale cold goods over short distances, like ice cream. In the 1950s, though, the Federal Highway Act made roads easier to travel by creating a system of smooth highways with good signage. This meant that reefer trucks could be used on a national scale to transport frozen foods, fresh produce, meat, plasma and blood, heat-sensitive electronics, wine, and many other products. The versatility of reefer trucks is practically unlimited, and new uses are found all the time.

How Does a Reefer Truck Work?

There is a large refrigeration unit installed in every reefer truck, which is cooled using a combination of liquid carbon dioxide and diesel generators. The system has three parts: 

• Compressor: pulls in and compresses gaseous refrigerants so the system can then liquefy them to draw out heat.

• Condenser: cools down liquid with a heat exchange that uses tubes connected to the truck’s exterior.

• Evaporator: releases cooled liquid with a metering valve to keep the interior of the truck at the correct temperature.
