Company History
Founded in 1942 as a corporate spin-off from previous manufacturers, Hino Motors Ltd. was named after the city where its headquarters are located: Hino, a part of Western Tokyo. The company was initially called Hino Heavy Industry Co., Ltd., and was a spin-off off the Diesel Motor Industry Co., Ltd, which had been founded as the Tokyo Gas Industry Company in 1910, which produced its first truck in 1917.
Over the course of World War II, Hino manufactured vehicles for the Imperial Japanese Army, then dropped the “heavy” in the company name to manufacture trailer-trucks, buses and diesel-engines. By 1953, the company was manufacturing cars and trucks before joining Toyota in 1967, whereupon their production began to focus primarily on commercial truck manufacturing.
Coming to America
Hino trucks entered the American market in 1995, with the founding of Hino Motors Manufacturing U.S.A, Inc. in Williamstown, West Virginia. A California parts manufacturer distributes parts for various Hino trucks.
