Survival Tips For Semi Truck Drivers
If you’re new to the world of trucking, adapting to life on the road can be a real challenge. Rookie semi truck drivers have a lot of things on their plates and it can take a while to feel like living your life out of truck stops and your cab is even doable. Here are a few tips on how to survive the trucking life as a new driver.
Manage Time Wisely
One of the biggest problems that new truckers face is time management. It can be very easy to misjudge how long a day’s drive will take, how long fueling up will take, how long your meal breaks take, and how much you need to sleep. As a result, you may end up sacrificing food or a shower for sleep, or sacrificing sleep to get more work done.
This is not just undesirable, but potentially dangerous, because if you’re hungry or tired or don’t feel well, then you won’t be as attentive while driving. Try to set up a schedule when you get your hours to determine how long it will take you to arrive at a destination and where to place your meal and fuel breaks and when you can sleep.
Locate Services You Need
While people who work in a city have ready access to food, restrooms, laundry facilities, drugstores, and all of the other things we need, you’re going to find that services are fewer and further between on the road. Checking out your route in advance to see what various truck stops offer can help you to locate fuel stations that offer showers, laundry, healthy meals, and a safe environment. Some fuel stations may even offer you shower credits for fueling up with them, so take advantage of this when you can to stay clean!
