History

Founded in Portland, OR, in 1929, the predecessor to today’s Freightliner® Corporation was called Consolidated Freightways. Leland James reestablished the enterprise in 1942 under its current name. James wanted to construct trucks out of lightweight and affordable aluminum instead of the traditional steel, although other people weren’t convinced that this would work. 

Undaunted, James was able to produce the world’s first all-aluminum truck cab. Freightliner produced vehicles for use by the United States military during World War II before resuming civilian production in 1947. A popular innovation was their overhead-mounted sleeper cab, released in 1953. In 1981, the company was placed under the helm of Daimler AG, although its headquarters are still in Portland.
